Maintaining healthy engine oil is an often overlooked, yet crucial component of car care. Keeping up with the recommended oil change intervals for your vehicle will help prevent costly repairs and hazardous situations. For most Napa drivers, an oil change is recommended every 7,500-10,000 miles, but your owner’s manual will have exact information.

Hyundai Elantra Recommended Oil

So what kind of oil does a Hyundai Elantra take? There are two Hyundai Elantra oil options to choose from; conventional and synthetic. Conventional is the unrefined crude oil that’s utilized by most cars in Petaluma. Conventional oil needs to be changed every 3,000-5,000 miles, but it’s more affordable upfront than synthetic oil.

While synthetic oil does have a higher upfront cost, it is actually the preferred Hyundai Elantra oil type. Synthetic oil has been refined and includes additives to lengthen the lifespan of the oil. Synthetic oil also works better in high-performance models. What’s more, synthetic oil can last up to 10,000 miles before a change is needed.

You can choose either of these grades to select the Hyundai Elantra recommended oil type:

  • 5W-20
  • 5W-30

However, if you enjoy the satisfaction of rolling your sleeves up and taking on service yourself, you can learn how to properly change your Hyundai Elantra oil by following the steps below:

  1. Purchase either the 5W-20 or 5W-30 Hyundai Elantra oil type.
  2. Get your hands on an oil filter. One of our team members can help you find one that will work for you.
  3. Use a car jack or steel ramps to elevate your Elantra. Be sure to secure with jack stands or wheel blocks.
  4. Make your way under your Elantra, preferably with a dolly.
  5. Locate the oil drain plug on the bottom of the oil pan under the engine. Your owner’s manual will show you exactly where to look.
  6. Place an oil basin or a tub under the drain plug, unscrew, and allow the old oil to drain completely. This process may take up to 15 minutes. Once the oil is fully drained, replace the plug.
  7. Find the oil filter and move the oil basin underneath it. Remove the oil filter with an oil filter wrench, expect a bit of extra oil to drain at this point.
  8. Rub a bit of new car oil around the rubber seal on the fresh filter. This will ensure that your filter is watertight and easy to remove when the next oil change is needed.
  9. Put the new oil filter in place, tighten it by hand, then use an oil filter wrench to fasten it completely.
  10. Head to the engine and pour the proper amount of new oil into the oil well. This should be just about 4.2 quarts of oil for the Hyundai Elantra.
  11. Replace the cap to the oil well.
  12. Inspect the oil level with a dipstick. If you’re still a bit low, add another ounce and re-check. Once you’ve reached a sufficient level, you’ve successfully changed your oil!
